Dragons use will magic, which is an innate type of magic generally used defensively. Will magic is based entirely on the will, the intent of the user. "Where there's a will, there's a way."
Normally dragon magic is used for shields and pacifistic intervention. That's not to say it can't be used aggressively or violently, but, with their large size and natural weaponry of teeth and claws, most dragons see no reason to do so. It is considered disgraceful to use will magic in a fight between dragons.
Will magic is a very complex system, though on the surface it seems simplistic. Will magic is its own inherent weakness; if an opponent believes that they will break through the shield more than the user believes the shield will hold, the opponent will do exactly as they believe.
This type of magic is exceedingly difficult to master, and it has fallen into disuse except by many mother dragons to protect their young from falls and bumps.
