A mixture of humanoid and equine, the centaur is a graceful race, often thought to be skittish and shy. In actuality, the centaur is extremely territorial and prone to violence first and questions later. They very rarely allow foreigners on their soil, but they don't actually patrol their borders. Instead, they simply kill those who would infringe upon their territory.
Fortunately for those who wish for a glance at this pugnacious race, the centaurs don't limit their hostility to other species. Within centaur society there are a large number of clans, though only three are large enough to be of any note.
A nomadic race, their families are, nevertheless, still very important to them. A clan will be made up of at least two herds, which are the smaller family groups. The large clans can have upwards of 100 herds, though it's been a long time since any clan has managed even that size. Clans tend to be named off of bright or unnatural colours.
Centaurs are notoriously colour racist. Certain colours, due to their prominence in the gene pools, are considered above others. Unsurprisingly, the three main clans are based off of these colourations.
Anything outside of these colours is considered deviant and looked down upon. If born into a herd in one of these three clans, their family will take care of them, but they will obviously be the low man on the totem pole. Still, it's generally accepted that it's better to be the lowest than to be without a clan.
There are rumours of a clan of deviant colours roaming somewhere in the grasslands, but if there is, it keeps itself well-hidden.
