Maesrai, or maesraz for singular, were one of the first shaman experiments. Taking their simple, dumb 'cousins'-- a loose, derogatory term for normal horses-- the shamans increased the intelligence of their pastoral herds.
The horses that the centaurs keep are now fully sentient, though they cannot speak. Maesrai tend to be a bit bigger and taller than their normal kin, with larger heads and big eyes. Their colour genes are still limited to what any normal horse could show, but there are rumours of experiments on that as well.
Maesrai are treated as a mixture between favoured pets and the livestock they actually are. They are regarded with a sort of condescension on the Plains because a sentient horse is still not a centaur. Off of the Plains, however, they are highly prized and exceedingly rare.
