A mixture of large cat and raptor bird, gryphons are rumoured to have been created by the shamans centuries ago, but released into the wilds as a failed experiment. From there, legend says the strange creatures were adopted by an equally unusual cult of dragons who granted them intelligence and the ability to speak. They helped the gryphons develop their culture and made certain that they could procreate, before carefully resettling them in the hills and mountains that lie north of the Kumei Grasslands.
The area became known as the Shriek Hills, because of the sounds of the new residents. The Shriek Hills are located across the entirety of Tazelos.
The gryphons are territorial, something that might be proof of their origins. They aren't entirely unfeeling about this, however; they try very hard to be civilised even in their territory disputes. This was a tenet passed down to them by their legendary patron Alydar.
Said to be a silvery dragon with multiple wings, Alydar was the one who made sure they settled into their hills, helped them develop their culture, and procured an alliance with the resident race of the land.
The gryphons come in a variety of types, one of the main being eagle and lion. Other common mixes are tiger and falcon, and panther and hawk, but they are certainly not limited to these only. A gryphon's genetics are based on their parents; an lion/eagle crossed with a tiger/falcon cannot throw a panther/eagle or tiger/hawk, they can only have other lion/eagles, tiger/falcons, or a cross mixture of their own types.
Gryphons give birth to kits, who will eventually become fledglings, and then grow to adulthood. Females will give birth to one, two, or four kits at a time, though every once in a blue moon, a gryphon will give birth to six kits. In this case, the kits tend to be very small and weak, and there's a good chance they won't survive on their own. In this case, the gryphons will, sadly, turn to their human neighbours to aid in the care and raising of these kits.
Gryphons speak verbally, though they tend to have very sibilant speech and a propensity for using words that emphasize this. The ability to hiss is considered very pleasing in gryphon society.
