A humanoid, elves are generally tall and lithe, though it's not unheard of them to have 'human-esque' bodies. The main difference between the two species are the pointed ears all elves share. Elves generally live two to five thousand years. They officially hit maturity at the age of 100, though they will normally begin training in their preferred life path before that age.
Among the elves there are 3 different groups: Light, Knowledge, and Dark. Originally the only difference among the elves was their bloodlines. Light married Light; Knowledge, Knowledge; Dark, Dark. Social deviants would be accepted among one set or the other and then partially shunned. Just shunned enough to let them know they did wrong, but not shunned enough to send them somewhere else.
In time, the three groups separated themselves more and more. The Light remained as the most seen of the elves. Knowledge elves moved themselves into seclusion to better focus on the scholarly, religious, and enlightened. Dark elves moved underground and, intermarried with dwarves.
Light elves are tall and willowy, and show a wide range of colours in hair and eyes and have the equivalent of human pale skin which has the possibility of being tanned. Not to bronzed, but tanned nevertheless. They are, basically, most people's elven archetype. They are also the most common of the elves.
Knowledge elves have mostly remained hidden from the sun, and have grown so pale as to basically be albino. Their hair tends to be pale colours, a whitish metallic gold is the most common.
Dark elves are shorter than most elves; they still tend to be a little taller than humans, but really not by much. They have darker skin, and darker hair colours; dark brownish-black is the most common. Their eyes, through breeding and evolution, have changed to slight cat slits that work much the same way. They -can- see colours, but they tend to be rather muted, just another reason that Dark elves like bright colours so much. They can see in about 1/6 of the light other elves can, so in almost near darkness.
Despite, this, their underlying cultures are more or less the same: they celebrate a higher being, though it is the embodiment of their chosen 'elements'.
Elves as a whole are notoriously biased against other elves and other races and species.
