As expected, Merfolk encompasses both Mermen and Merwomen. Not much is known about the merfolk as they retreated to the depths of their watery homes at the start of the Dragon-Elf Wars.
Legends do still exist about them, and the normal person would know that they do, or at least did, exist and that they were thought to have psychic abilities. These gaps in common knowledge have further steeped the merfolk in mystery.
In truth, there are still a few merfolk who act as traders with very select people. The people with these coveted connections will not betray the confidence of their suppliers, however, as the merfolk are well capable of making their displeasure known.
The one union they have kept up is with the dragons, who are very protective of their allies. To cement this coalition, there has been interbreeding between the two, though this is not well known outside of the two races involved.
Despite this alliance, however, the merfolk have been pursued by a few unrelenting humans, a family line following the footsteps of their patriarch Fausto Cyril. A family of some mage ability, they have used their magic to capture, dissect, and attempt to interrogate merfolk for centuries. Their knowledge is held secret within the family itself and has certainly become an obsession.
For the most part, Merfolk are peaceful, though they still trade for weaponry and armour from the surface. The pieces, preferably dwarven, eventually rust away, especially for those who live in saltwater, thus guaranteeing a regular trade with the landdwellers.
